Project Description
An article on the Art & Architecture complex building at the University of Utah describes the building as, “Designed to satisfy the University’s need to have both departments in a central location, this building became one of the finest visual arts centers in the country with its completion in 1970. The 140,000 square foot facility is composed of studio workshops, exhibition galleries for each department, and a museum. It was designed in the Brutalist style, which was popular for major projects nationally at this time, but is rarely found in Utah. To this day it is a functional building with a high level of architectural aesthetic. The complex received the AIA Utah Chapter’s 25 Year Award in 2006. Active discussions about making the architecture half of the building a net zero demonstration project began in earnest in 2009. The University has received federal funding to further these discussions but it is unknown how this potential project may impact the original award-winning design.”1
