Project Description
Project under the administration of Neal Stowe. Structural consultants: E.W. Allen & Associates.1
An article from The Bulletin describes the structure: "Due to the expanding enrollment of students on campus at the time, a second level 52,000 square foot addition was made to the Salt Lake Community College Center, or student union, which was designed by Astle/Ericson & Associates and subsequently added to the building. This expansion included the addition of a new suite of student services offices, a large multipurpose area, and an open central concourse to the already established meeting rooms, craft centers, cafeteria, bookstore, student activities center, and games area."2
Mr. Astle also described the project as follows, “This new library meets urgent needs generated by rapid growth and represents Salt Lake Community College’s commitment to academic excellence. Designed in the context of the campus master plan, it anchors a new campus quad and creates a pedestrian mall at the center of the campus. Inside it uses light to provide orientation and create an environment that allows students to immerse themselves in a variety of learning resources.”3
Another article on the structure stated that, “An open central concourse, with natural lighting from a clerestory and an opening to main floor below, offers orientation and additional room…” and, “The center houses student-related administrative services, student government, the college store, testing, cashiering, information centers, games, crafts and recreation programs. It is used by both students and community members for banquets, dances, lectures, presentations, exhibitions and other activities.”4
